Milk Peptides Lower Blood Pressure

Hypertension (high blood pressure) is one of the leading risk factors of heart attack and stroke. While high blood pressure runs in families, people can decrease the risk through weight control, exercise, reducing salt and alcohol consumption, and eat­ing more fruits and vegetables.

Chinese researchers, pooling the results of 12 studies using a statistical method called meta-analysis, found that the consump­tion of milk peptides reduced systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Milk pep­tides are groups of amino acids formed during the digestion of milk. Examples include whey and whey isolates. Milk peptides reduced blood pressure best in people with hypertension or pre-hypertension (blood pressure greater than 130/80). The effects of dairy consump­tion on obesity and blood pressure are extremely controversial and require fur­ther study.
